Gates with a rustic feel provide an attractive alternative.
Choosing Your Gate
The range and variety of gates that are available to you can be confusing, so perhaps a first step is to think about what the key points are about having gates and automation.  Is security your principal concern, if so at what level?  For example, electric gates to keep pets in might not require the same security measures as electric gates to keep unwanted visitors out.  If the automatic gates are to cover a vehicle access, will you need a smaller pedestrian gate beside it with manual opening to make it more convenient for people to get in if they are not driving.

Are your electric gates to provide privacy, to prevent the public being able to see into your garden?  In that case a metal barred gate would not do unless it was fitted with panels (which can be quite decorative); a wooden barred gate would equally not fit the bill, but a high wooden gate with panels probably would.

When it comes to opting for wood, the first choice is between soft and hard woods.  The latter will last longer but even soft wood will give you many years of service, especially if coated with a speciality oil for example.  There are several lovely hard woods to choose from, which weather into natural shades, and these too can be treated with oil coatings.

For many people a two-leaf swing gate is the ideal solution.  However, not all sites are suitable.  For example, if space is limited or the ground or the drive slopes upwards, it might be better to opt for a sliding gate.  This has an advantage of not taking up space when open, but does need lateral space in order to slide free of the entrance.  Sliding gates can be of wood or metal, either can take gate automation.

That brings us into choice of automation.  Of course, gate automation is usually optional but the lack of it can prove inconvenient if you are driving and wish to leave or arrive at your home.  Getting in and out of the car to open and then close the gates behind you is an exercise you might like to avoid.  Automation allows you to open the automatic gates without getting out of the car, and with an access control system, without leaving your house - to let visitors in for example.

Please bear in mind that all automatic gates must be certified as being safe.  We install safety edges on electric gates to ensure that no harm can be caused to people or vehicles.
